What is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping Therapy Explained by Peter Lok Acupuncture in Las Vegas

Cupping is a form of alternative therapy that involves placing cups on your skin in order to create suction. The suction helps to facilitate healing with the blood flow as well as the flow of “qi” (a Chinese word meaning life force) in your body, similar to the principle behind acupuncture. Cupping therapy is beneficial for increasing the blood circulation in the areas in which the cups are placed, which can relieve muscle tension and improve the overall blood flow and promotion of cell repair. Peter Lok Acupuncture clinic in Las Vegas offers cupping treatment to address a range of conditions.

The History of Cupping

Originally, cupping was performed using animal horns and later using bamboo or ceramic cups. Modern cupping consists of suction that is primarily done with the use of heat and glass cups. There are two types of cupping; dry cupping is the suction only method and wet cupping involves both suction and controlled medicinal bleeding.

What Conditions Can Cupping Treat?

Cupping can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, especially chronic conditions that create muscle aches and pains. Other conditions cupping has been used for include:

  • Cough and dyspnea
  • Acne
  • Facial paralysis
  • Cervical spondylosis
  • Lumbar disc herniation

During cupping therapy, a cup is placed on your skin and then heated and/or suctioned onto your skin. When the cup is placed on the skin, the air inside the cup cools and creates a vacuum that draws the muscle and the skin upward into the cup. The side effects may include skin turning red, as the blood vessels respond to the change in pressure. In the majority of situations, bruising or redness will typically go away within 7-10 days after your session.
