Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment from Our Las Vegas Acupuncturist
If you’re experiencing pain, tingling and other odd sensations in the hands or feet, with or without accompanying a loss of function in those extremities, you’re exhibiting the classic symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. This form of nagging misery, a common outcome of chronic illnesses, medical procedures, and injuries, can severely limit both your physical capabilities and your ability to enjoy life. As with so many other uncomfortable conditions, however, acupuncture and other forms of Traditional Chinese medicine can provide significant, safe, lasting relief — and you can get this relief from our Las Vegas acupuncturist at Peter Lok Acupuncture.
What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy is a dysfunction of the peripheral nervous system, the complex internal network that relays sensory and motor information between your brain/spinal cord and the rest of the body. This dysfunction causes a variety of symptoms that may be associated with a single nerve or body part (mononeuropathy) or with multiple areas (polyneuropathy). This problem may be caused by:
- Acute injuries such as auto accidents or sports injuries
- Repetitive motion or chronic overuse injuries
- Diabetes, autoimmune diseases, tumors and other underlying health conditions
- Exposure to toxins (including chemotherapy)
- Post-surgical nerve damage, stretching or compression
Peripheral neuropathy can affect the skin and internal organs, but it’s most notorious for creating symptoms in the hands and feet. Tingling, pain and burning sensations (especially at night) are common symptoms, as are muscle weakness, muscle wasting and even total loss of motor function (paralysis). In some cases, loss of control over the muscles that regulate certain internal processes can even cause incontinence, low blood pressure, and irregular heartbeat.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Can Improve Nerve Function
Traditional Chinese Medicine traces peripheral neuropathy to specific imbalances in your body’ internal energy patterns. Dampness accumulating in the limbs, for instance, may upset both blood flow and qi flow, depriving tissues of the nourishment required for normal nerve function. Imbalances in kidney yin/yang may also be a factor. By correcting these imbalances, our Las Vegas acupuncturist, Dr. Lok, can treat your neuropathy at a deeper level than the common Western-medicine strategy of simply numbing the symptoms temporarily. Many acupuncture points on the hands, feet, and body can be used to treat peripheral neuropathy. (The extremity points can be seen as treating the branches of the disorder, while the body points address its root.)
Research has documented acupuncture’s success in treating peripheral neuropathy. One study found that 34 out of 46 diabetic neuropathy patients enjoyed relief after 6 sessions, while a study of patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy all noticed improvements in their symptoms.
