Acupuncture for Insomnia in Las Vegas
Insomnia is the acute or chronic inability to initiate or maintain adequate nighttime sleep. Treating insomnia can be a challenging and frustrating process, especially if you don’t want to rely on prescription medication to fall asleep at night. Acupuncture is one of the available effective sleep improvement techniques. Research studies have found that acupuncture increases melatonin production and total sleep time in individuals with anxiety. Additional studies have found that individuals receiving acupuncture treatments for other health condition also reported an improvement in sleep quality.
Acupuncture Helps Relieve Insomnia Without Medications
For some individuals, insomnia may be temporarily brought on by periods of stress, emotional discomfort or even jet lag. This insomnia usually corrects itself on its own. For others, however, insomnia persists despite attempts to change the sleep environment, go to bed early, meditate to relieve stress, or other interventions. In addition to being chronically exhausted, it’s natural to feel overwhelmed, frustrated and worry that medication may be the only effective treatment option. The good news is that acupuncture treatments can make a difference – and they may be able to do so without drugs.
Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that if the “qi” – the body’s life force – becomes blocked, sickness, fatigue, exhaustion, and poor health are natural results. Traditional Chinese medicine also looks at balances and imbalances in the body when assessing the cause for a health problem. For example, waking up easily during the night may be the result of a heart yin deficiency. Difficulty falling asleep may be linked to stomach, liver or gallbladder problems. The Ancient Chinese believed that by using thin needles to stimulate the “qi”, they could restore balance to the body and the internal organs, and thereby correct these health problems.
Contemporary science recognizes that the “qi” is in many ways a metaphor for the body’s central nervous system. By placing long, thin needles in specific pressure points through the body, this stimulates the central nervous system to produce different neurotransmitters. This can help everything from relieving chronic pain to improving sleep patterns.
While acupuncture may not be the first thing that comes to mind for the best way to treat insomnia, it can be highly effective. Our acupuncturist has witnessed time and time again the difference that several acupuncture sessions can make when it comes to relieving stress and enabling patients to not only fall asleep more easily, but to stay asleep through the night and wake naturally.
